| 1940 SEASON REVIEW |
The Indains team of 1940 can be noted for it's lack of stars as much as
anything else. Other than ace pitcher Jim Turner who went 21-12 with a
2.97 ERA few players put up big numbers. Bill Lohrman was an exception as
he went 9-4 with a 2.56 ERA once he was given the chance to start midway
through the year. The Indians had no player hit more than .300, have more
than 11 home runs or more than 83 RBI. Only through a team effort and good
managing was Cleveland able to finish with the almost .500 record of 74-80.
Cleveland did make some moves during the offseason to try and improve themselves,
the Indians signed seven players. The Indians weren't able to sign any big name players,
however, so yet again they will be a team of role players. The Indians do have a bright future
after drafting future stars third baseman Whitey Kurowski and center fielder Bud Stewart
but don't expect much more than a middle of the pack 1941 season for the Indians as neither
their pitching or hitting is that good.
